For Katelyn Wort, being selected for the England Lionesses 6-a-side squad represents the realisation of a dream she had since childhood. The defender described the news as an “unbelievable honour” and a huge achievement in her footballing journey.

How did you feel when you found out you had been selected for the England Lionesses 6-a-side performance squad?

“I feel unbelievably honoured. It’s a huge achievement for me as a player and a dream come true. I’ve always dreamed of representing my country from a young age. The hard work, dedication and sacrifice over the years has all been worth it.”

Representing England is something Wort knows carries huge significance. She is grateful to the coaches who have supported her throughout her journey.

What does representing England mean to you?

“Representing England is massive for me. It’s an honour and a privilege. I want to thank all the coaches that have supported me over the years, for believing in me and helping me so much.”

While Wort has experience playing 11-a-side football, 6-a-side presents a completely different challenge, with a faster tempo and a greater emphasis on tactical awareness and ball control.

Has playing 6-a-side been different from what you’re used to playing in your usual
football?

“6-a-side is so different from 11s. It’s a higher tempo, more tactical, more about control with the sole of your foot. It’s like a mixture of football and futsal really.”

The opportunity will give Wort the chance to experience a different style of the game while continuing to develop her abilities.

Is there anything specific you’re hoping to improve or develop through the England programme?

“I’m hoping to gain more experience and improve as a player. My confidence has already improved on the ball but I hope to improve it further.”

Wort’s journey with Southampton Women’s FC has spanned several years. She spent five years with the club at youth level before returning at senior level, initially featuring for the reserves and making a number of appearances for the first time. After returning midway through last season, Wort has continued to develop as part of the Sirens setup.

How proud are you to represent Southampton Women’s FC while being involved with England?

“Southampton Women’s FC is an incredible club. I was here for 5 years at youth, then returned a few years ago at senior level for the reserves and a few games for the firsts and then came back midway through last season. Sirens isn’t just a club it’s a home. It’s somewhere I’ve developed and grown as a player. The coaches and staff are incredible and all want to develop you as a player and person.”

For Wort, the support around the clubs has played an important role in her development both on and off the pitch. She also praised the people around her for the support they have shown since her England selection.

What has the support from your teammates and coaches been like since finding out?

“The coaches and staff are incredible and all want to develop you as a player and person. Everyone has been amazing. They are all so supportive and caring. Everyone wants what’s best for you.”

Having reached an exciting milestone in her own career, Wort hopes her journey can inspire other young players to continue chasing their ambitions, even when they face setbacks along the way. Her message is simple: keep working, keep believing and never allow difficult moments to define you.

What would you say to any young players at Southampton who dream of representing their country one day?

“Keep chasing your dreams, keep working hard. Don’t let your setbacks define you, everything happens for a reason, you just have to get back up, dust yourself off and keep pushing. Dreams do come true if you put your all in."

For Wort, an England call-up if not only a huge personal achievement, but another step in a journey built on hard work, perseverance and the support of those around her.
