MATCH PREVIEW | Denham United Women vs The Sirens

Southampton Women's FC

The Sirens head to The Den looking to build on their perfect start to the season.

Southampton Women’s FC return to league action on Sunday 13 September, as the Sirens travel to Buckinghamshire to face Denham United at The Den.

Following an impressive 4–0 victory over Chesham United on the opening weekend, Aaron Smith’s side will be looking to build on their strong start and secure another positive result away from home.

The opposition

Denham United are newcomers to the Southern Region Women’s Football League Premier Division this season and play their home fixtures at The Den in New Denham.

The club has an established women’s and girls’ setup, providing opportunities for players across its youth and senior teams.

Denham began their league campaign with a 4–2 defeat away to Sholing last weekend. Despite leaving Southampton without any points, scoring twice on their return to Premier Division action demonstrated the attacking threat they can pose.

Back on home soil for the first time this season, Denham will be determined to respond positively and record their first points of the campaign.

Last time out

The Sirens made the perfect start to their 2026/27 league campaign with an impressive 4–0 victory over Chesham United at The Meadow.

New signing Katie Ellwood opened the scoring with a well-directed header before returning Siren Jade Hockey doubled Southampton’s advantage with a strike from outside the box shortly before half-time.

Chloe Tedman added a brilliant third from distance in the second half, while Julia Pietrzyk completed the scoring with a calm finish in stoppage time.

At the other end of the pitch, Grace Jenman produced two excellent penalty saves to preserve Southampton’s clean sheet, while Katelyn Wort delivered a standout performance at the heart of the defence.

Four different goalscorers, two penalty saves and a clean sheet ensured Aaron Smith’s side returned home with all three points.

Previous meeting

The two sides last met in competitive action on 3 September 2017, when Southampton recorded a 4–2 victory over Denham United.

Nine years on, both squads will look very different as the teams prepare to begin a new chapter in this fixture.

Ones to watch

Southampton’s summer additions made an immediate impact on the opening weekend, with Ellwood and Hockey both scoring on their first competitive starts following their arrivals at the club.

Sky Stone and Aime Chiddle also made their Sirens debuts, while Libby Carter and Lexie Peattie were named among the substitutes.

With goals coming from four different players against Chesham, the Sirens demonstrated the attacking options available across the squad. Southampton will now be looking to maintain that threat while building on the strong defensive performance that secured their first clean sheet of the season.

What to expect

Sunday’s fixture brings together two sides aiming to establish themselves strongly during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Denham will be looking for a response in front of their home support following last weekend’s defeat, while Southampton will want to build on the confidence created by their opening-day victory.

The Sirens will be focused on maintaining their intensity, producing another disciplined team performance and returning from Buckinghamshire with a positive result.
