Following an impressive opening-day victory over Chesham United, the Sirens arrived in Buckinghamshire looking to build on their strong start and secure a second consecutive away win.

It was a physical contest from the opening stages, with both sides competing strongly for possession and giving one another very little time on the ball.

Within 6 minutes, Lucy Mear was brought down in the opposition’s penalty box and a penalty was awarded. Mear calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to give the Sirens the lead early on.

The Sirens continued to apply pressure to Denham, switching the ball well and using the width to their advantage. Aime Chiddle almost bagged herself a goal but her shot was narrowly wide.

Shortly after, Denham responded and managed to bring themselves level, but Southampton refused to allow the setback to disrupt their momentum. The visitors continued to push forward and regained their advantage before the break. Eva Coulter finished another positive attacking move to make it 2–1.

The Sirens entered half-time ahead after a competitive opening 45 minutes in which both sides had created opportunities.

Half-time: Denham United 1-2 Southampton Women’s FC

The Sirens returned for the second half looking to build on their 2–1 advantage, but Denham came out strongly and began applying more pressure as they searched for an equaliser.

The game continued to be extremely physical, with Southampton having to remain disciplined and battle for every ball. The flow of the match was regularly interrupted by fouls and several decisions that went against the visitors, preventing the Sirens from establishing the same attacking rhythm they had shown before the break.

Chiddle continued to bring plenty of energy and passion to the midfield, working tirelessly both in and out of possession. Behind her, Mear remained strong and composed as Southampton dealt with increasing pressure from the hosts.

Lexie Peattie also continued to impress on her league debut. At just 16 years old, the defender looked composed in possession, remained strong in her tackles and more than held her own throughout a difficult and physical contest.

As the match entered its closing stages, Denham pushed more players forward and placed the Sirens’ defence under increasing pressure. Southampton continued to stand firm, with the players working together to protect their narrow advantage.

Libby Carter was called into action in the 87th minute, reacting quickly to come off her line and deny Denham a clear opportunity on goal.

The Sirens appeared to have done enough to secure all three points, but the hosts continued pushing until the final whistle. Deep into stoppage time, the ball fell to Annie Hewitt, who struck in the fourth additional minute to bring Denham level with just seconds remaining.

There was little time for Southampton to respond before the final whistle confirmed a frustrating 2–2 draw.

Despite the disappointing finish, the result leaves Southampton unbeaten after their opening two fixtures, with four points collected from two difficult away trips.

The Sirens now turn their attention to the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, with AFC Portchester awaiting them next weekend.
