MATCH REPORT: FLEET TOWN 2-4 SIRENS

MATCH REPORT: FLEET TOWN 2-4 SIRENS

Southampton Women's FC1 Sep - 20:00

The Sirens got their season underway with an impressive away victory.

Ball's first-half double helped give the Sirens three points away at Fleet Town.

The forward opened the scoring in the 11th minute, as she found herself at the back post to head in from Tedman’s pinpoint corner.

Ball thought she had doubled her tally moments later with another neat finish, only to be denied by the assistant’s late flag.

Relentless pressure soon paid off as in the 26th minute, Ball capitalised on a defensive lapse in the box, pressing brilliantly before finishing smartly to make it 2-0.

Tedman was at the heart of a lot of the attacking play, combining superbly with Conti down the left and later threading dangerous deliveries into the area.

Set-pieces were a real threat all afternoon for the Sirens as Kaur’s corner almost brought further reward when Wright headed just wide.

The third goal came in the 36th minute through substitute Crooks, who made an instant impact after replacing Holmes. Her smart strike from edge of the box crashed off the underside of the bar and in.

Fleet showed flashes of danger and just before half-time got one back with a cross from a free-kick and good header in the box which reduced the deficit to 3-1 at the break.

After the restart, the game settled into a slower paced match. O’Leary and Soares were introduced from the bench, while Ball went close to completing her hat-trick with a fine run and low strike that hit the outside of the post.

The game was settled five minutes from time. Tedman made another brilliant run down the left and cut the ball back perfectly for Lynn, who swept a composed finish into the bottom corner to make it 4-1.

With a few minutes left to play Wright and Lynn made way as Evans and Coulter came on.

Fleet got one back late on from a corner but it wasn't enough as the Sirens came away as 4-2 victors.

The result gives the Sirens a perfect start to the season and a platform to build upon.
