
Debutant Glover shines as Sirens extend fine form at Mortgage Decisions Stadium
Southampton Women FC continued their impressive run of performances with a convincing 3–1 victory away at Sholing, as debutant Glover struck twice and Kirby added another to send the Sirens through to the next round.
The visitors dominated from the start, dictating possession and territory in the Sholing half. Early chances for Lynn and Soares hinted at a breakthrough, with the Sirens pressing high and moving the ball well.
Kirby’s strong pressing nearly opened the scoring on 20 minutes, only to be denied by a fine stop from the Sholing goalkeeper one-on-one.
The Sirens’ pressure finally told on 40 minutes. A low corner from caused chaos in the area and the ball fell kindly to Glover, who smashed home a composed volley from close range into the bottom corner.
Just four minutes later, Kirby doubled the advantage, turning home Davies’ cross from point-blank range after another sweeping move down the right.
The domination continued after the half-time. Kirby and Lynn both tested the keeper again early in the second half, while Tedman’s clever free-kick was tipped onto the bar.
At the other end, Etheridge stood tall to deny a one-on-one chance as Sholing looked to find a way back into the match.
The hosts did pull one back in the 90th minute from a set-piece whipped into the box, but any hopes of a comeback were short-lived.
Deep into stoppage time, the Sirens launched a swift counter-attack and Glover capped her memorable debut with a surging run and clinical finish to make it 3–1.
It was a strong display from the Sirens, who in truth could have won by a lot more.
