Southampton Women were held to a goalless draw by Wycombe Wanderers in a competitive encounter at Redbridge, with the Sirens creating several chances but ultimately unable to find the breakthrough.
Before kick-off, both teams observed a minute’s silence followed by a minute’s applause in memory of former Southampton Women’s player Lynda Hale, who sadly passed away. The tribute was warmly observed by players, staff and supporters.
Wycombe produced the first opportunity of the afternoon inside four minutes when a low cross into the box was flicked towards goal, but goalkeeper Jenman reacted well to collect.
The Sirens responded soon after through Kjaer, who beat her marker and cut inside before seeing her effort blocked.
Play was paused in the seventh minute following a head injury to a Wycombe attacker, and shortly after the restart the 10th minute applause for Hale took place around the ground.
The visitors came close midway through the half when a looping cross almost caught the Sirens out, striking the crossbar.
The Sirens' best chances before the break came from deliveries into the area. A long ball from Mears down the left was flicked on by Ball towards the back post, but no one could arrive in time to convert.
Kaur also went close on the half-hour mark, adjusting well to a dropping ball at the back post before sending a difficult volley narrowly over the bar.
Kjaer was shown a yellow card shortly afterwards, while Kaur also attempted a free-kick from distance that sailed over but we went into the break goalless.
Tedman tested the Wycombe goalkeeper early in the half with a powerful strike from around 30 yards.
Wycombe threatened from a corner in the 54th minute but could not direct their header on target from close range. Kaur again tried her luck from distance just before the hour mark but her effort drifted over.
The hosts came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 65th minute when Tedman’s long-range free-kick forced the goalkeeper to tip the ball onto the crossbar and out for a corner.
Moments later, Glover delivered an excellent cross from the right that flashed across the face of goal with no one able to apply the finishing touch.
Wycombe had a late opportunity in stoppage time when a ball into the Sirens box threatened danger, but Jenman gathered comfortably to ensure the scores remained level.
Despite chances for both sides most both ultimately had to settle for a point from a hard-fought afternoon.
