MATCH REPORT: SIRENS 0-3 AFC PORTCHESTER

Southampton Women's FC2 Feb - 14:31

The Sirens exit the SRWFL Cup at a very wet Stoneham Lane yesterday evening.

Portchester ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in a rain-soaked contest at Stoneham Lane, scoring three first-half goals to take them into the next round of the cup.

The visitors struck early when a long ball over the top released their forward, who calmly lifted the ball over Etheridge to open the scoring in the eighth minute. Portchester doubled their advantage four minutes later, rising highest from a corner to power home a header.

The Sirens did have moments of promise going forward as Coulter was lively down the right and forced the goalkeeper into action after a neat attacking move and Wilson saw a long-range effort blocked.

However, it was Portchester who were the greater threat with Etheridge producing a fine save to tip a close-range effort over the bar.

Just before the break, Portchester extended their lead. A low cross from the left found a forward inside the box, who finished smartly to make it 3-0 at half-time.

The home side made several changes after the restart in an effort to turn the tide but it wasn't really the Sirens day.

A worrying moment came in the 71st minute when goalkeeper Etheridge was forced off with an injury following a collision, Davies stepped in to see out the match between the sticks.

Kirby did go close in the 74th minute, turning and shooting inside the box but firing over the bar. Wilson also created opportunities in the final third with her passing but the Sirens couldn't find the right final ball.

Despite late pressure from Portchester, including a dangerous cross and a headed chance from a corner, the Sirens defended well in the closing stages to prevent any further goals.

However, the damage had already been done, as Portchester’s clinical first-half display gave them a ticket to the next round.
