
The Sirens picked up another 3 points in the league following a second-half comeback to beat Sholing 3-1 at Test Park. Goals from captain Lucy Mear, Chloe Tedman and Eliska Lynn lead the Sirens to victory after Sophie Elmes opened the scoring for Sholing on the stroke of half-time.
The home side started the stronger with a prolonged spell of possession before Manisha Kaur was brought down by the right touch line to win the game's first free kick. Following this, the Sirens were very much in the ascendancy and were looking the superior side, however, they struggled to find an opportunity in the opening exchanges.
Despite the early pressure from the home side, the game’s first opportunity of note went to the visitors as Sophie Lee was played through on goal, only to be denied by Sirens goalkeeper Leah Etheridge.
The home side then had a golden opportunity of their own through Chloe Ball. The striker drove forward towards the edge of the area and unleashed an effort which was well blocked by the Sholing defence.
The ball ricocheted back to Chloe Ball who’s first time effort was well saved by Grace Jennan in the Sholing goal.
As the game progressed, both sides were trying to stamp their authority on the encounter with chances coming thick and fast for both teams. Most notably for the away side through midfielder Sophie Elmes whose powerful strike from the edge of the area stung the hands of Leah Etheridge in the Sirens goal.
The Sirens quality started to show as they took control of possession and were looking the more likely team to score, however, the visitors were still looking a threat on the counterattack.
Following a sustained amount of pressure from the home side, Sholing goalkeeper Grace Jennan was called into action once again, this time making a routine catch to deny a curling effort from Sirens’ Izzy Conti.
Sholing responded well to this with some pressure of their own as Leah Etheridge in the Sirens goal was called into action and made a diving stop down to her right to keep the game goalless.
The home side were forced into an unexpected substitution as Lucy Mear made way for Lucie Waddon following a dangerous tackle on the Sirens captain. The visitors followed suit as Sophie Lee was replaced by Ella Wilson following the yellow card the Sholing forward picked up for her challenge on Sirens captain Lucy Mear.
The home side were on the ascendancy again forcing a succession of corners after Chloe Tedman’s free-kick was tipped round the post by Sholing goalkeeper Grace Lennan.
Despite the Sirens being the superior side, Sholing were still looking a threat and were once again testing Leah Etheridge from long range but the Sirens goalkeeper dealt with it with ease.
Some excellent pressure on the Sholing defence from Ella Wright brought about the next opportunity for the Sirens. Unfortunately, for the home side, Eliska Lynn’s snap shot went wide of the post as the game remained goalless.
The pressure from the home side continued to mount as efforts from Eliska Lynn and Ella Wright were both blocked thanks to some last ditch defending from the Sholing players following an inviting ball into the box from the corner.
As the half drew towards its conclusion the opening goal of the game went to the visiting side, completely against the run of play.
Midfielder Sophie Elmes was played through on goal before unleashing an effort into the top corner of the goal with goalkeeper Leah Etheridge rooted to the spot.
This was the final action of the half as the referee blew the half-time whistle seconds later.
As the second half got underway, the Sirens made their second change of the game with captain Lucy Mear returning to the field and Izzy Conti leaving the field.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first with the home side on top but they couldn’t make their dominance count and force an equaliser.
However, the pressure from the home side continued to mount with the first opportunity of the second half coming through a driving run from Chloe Tedman who forced Grace Jennan into making a diving stop before the ball went behind for a corner.
From the resulting corner, the Sirens were awarded a penalty after the ball dropped to striker Eliska Lynn who was clattered in the box, causing her to require treatment. Skipper Lucy Mear stepped up and smashed the ball into the net from 12-yards to level the scores at one a piece.
The Sirens pressure continued to mount and their second goal came through a wonderful curling effort from Chloe Tedman following a corner.
Sholing goalkeeper Grace Lennan could only palm the effort up onto the crossbar before the ball bounced over the line to give the Sirens the lead, to the delight of the players and supporters.
The home side doubled their lead minutes later following a devastating counter attack which saw Chloe Tedman involved once again.
The full-back was played through on goal before squaring the ball to Eliska Lynn to fire home for the Sirens third.
The Sirens continued to control the game with opportunities coming thick and fast. Most notably through goal scorer Eliska Lynn after some intricate midfield play.
The Sirens striker unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the area which forced Grace Lennan to make a diving stop away to her right to keep the score at 3-1 to the Sirens.
This proved to be the final action of the game which saw the Sirens come from behind to pick up all three points against Sholing following a 3-1 win.
