Coulter made way for Kjaer shortly after, and Etheridge was called into action again, producing a vital save from close range following a dangerous Torquay corner on 71 minutes.
As the clock ticked down, Ball was replaced by Soares in the final minutes, but heartbreak struck in the sixth minute of added time.
