MATCH REPORT: WYCOMBE WANDERERS 2-2 SIRENS

Southampton Women's FC23 Feb - 14:45

The Sirens are held to a point by the league leaders.

The Sirens were held to a dramatic 2–2 draw away to Wycombe Wanderers after conceding a stoppage time equaliser.

The Sirens made a perfect start as they took the lead inside four minutes. High pressing from Glover forced a mistake on the edge of the box and she finished emphatically to put the away side 1–0 ahead.

The visitors continued to dominate the opening stages, with most notably Kaur striking the crossbar from a free kick over 30 yards out.

Just before the half hour mark there was excellent link-up play between Kjaer and Ball down the right and it carved Wycombe open. Ball’s powerful effort forced an outstanding save from the goalkeeper. The rebound fell kindly to Lynn but her follow-up went over the bar.

The pressure from the Sirens continued to build. On 35 minutes a brilliantly delivered corner caused chaos in the Wycombe penalty area. A goalmouth scramble followed as several efforts were blocked before the hosts eventually cleared their lines.

A minute later, Glover was sent clean through one-on-one with the goalkeeper. It looked destined to be 2–0 but her effort drifted wide of the post.

The Sirens remained in control for much of the first half, though Jenman was called into action when required, producing important saves to preserve the lead as they went into the break deservedly ahead.

They extended their advantage shortly after the restart with a beautifully worked team goal. Lynn’s pinpoint pass released Glover, who beat her defender and squared for Kjaer to tap home at the back post making it 2–0.

Wycombe responded with increased intensity and began creating more opportunities. Jenman produced another excellent save, and a goal for the hosts was ruled out for handball, but the pressure eventually told as Wycombe pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining with a well-worked cross which found their forward in the box.

Late drama followed. A Wycombe player was sin-binned for dissent and the visitors looked set to see the game out. However, deep into stoppage time, the hosts found an equaliser to make it 2–2, denying the Sirens all three points.

After a fast start and long spells of control it was a frustrating afternoon for the Sirens, who will feel they did enough to win but had to settle for a point.
