Report | Bridgwater United Reserves 8 Southampton Reserves 3

El Reid14 Dec 2022 - 19:30

Shannon Albuery’s brace and a well-struck finish by Caitlin Bevan wasn’t enough to rescue the Reds.

Southampton Women's FC Reserves suffered back-to-back away defeats in the FA Women's National League Reserves South West.

The travelling team were looking to dust themselves off after the disappointment of the defeat to AFC Bournemouth Development the previous week.

It wasn't to be as Bridgwater proved to be clinical, a Shannon Albuery brace and a goal for Caitlin Bevan were merely consolations on the road.

Despite showing promise in the first half, the Sirens were unable to retain their cool for the rest of the game.

Bridgwater got themselves on the scoresheet early as they were awarded a penalty and swiftly dispatched it - Dani Kjaer was booked for the foul.

Bevan soon helped her team to equalise by cutting inside on the edge of Bridgwater’s box to strike the ball into the top corner.

Southampton’s backline were under constant pressure as they tried to deal with the invading long balls and looked to play out safely through Bridgwater’s press.

The Robins retook the lead for a short while before some Albuery magic in midfield levelled the game back to 2-2.

Soon after half-time, the Sirens fell behind and at 3-2 down started to lose their hold on the game.

Bridgwater’s in-form frontline rattled the Reds as they conceded four goals in quick succession.

Southampton were starting to look tired, Manisha Kaur received the second yellow of the game for a misjudged tackle.

Albuery, Kjaer and Emily Flegg continued their effort up front, and soon the former netted her second of the game.

Injuries forced Alex Rigby to rotate off Emily Kendall and Kjaer, with Kelsey Pye and the returning Charley Sanford coming on to replace them.

Despite the scoreline, Southampton kept trying, as El Reid and Flegg found pockets of space to get shots off.

The game ended with Bridgwater on a high, as they scored their eighth to complete the win.
