Report | Plymouth Argyle Development 0 Southampton Reserves 3

El Reid21 Feb 2023 - 19:00

Sian Wylie's brace continues Southampton's unbeaten streak.

Southampton Women’s FC Reserves made the long journey worth it with a 3-0 win over Plymouth.

Emily Flegg returned to the scoresheet to complete Southampton’s trio of goals.

Despite having won no league games this season, Plymouth started the first half with intensity and challenged Southampton’s defensive unit.

Their desire for a win was evident as they started to commit a handful of fouls to keep the ball.

After scoring twice last weekend against Keynsham, Manisha Kaur had the chance for more with a free-kick on the edge of Plymouth’s box.

She was unable to test Argyle’s inexperienced keeper, as the ball flew narrowly above the crossbar.

Wylie was exploiting the space on the right side, with Summer Kilby supporting her efforts centrally in the midfield.

The winger cut inside often but couldn’t yet find the net.

Plymouth were still proving to be a tough opponent, but Ellie Parker made lightwork of keeping them at bay.

The Devon team attempted to maintain their physicality, which saw a frustrated Plymouth striker exit the pitch early.

The teams entered the half-time break with the score level.

Two minutes into the second half, Charley Sanford dispossessed Plymouth in the midfield and set the ball to Flegg.

She touched the ball out wide into Wylie’s run, who struck the ball hard over the keeper’s head, for her first goal of the game.

Phoebe Hamilton started to become a menace, as she made multiple interceptions and forward runs.

She played the ball through to Flegg, who took a superb first touch to turn and set Wylie through on goal again.

The winger drove past her marker and slotted the ball low into the corner for Southampton’s second.

The Sirens were now fully settled and were playing attractive football.

The team worked the ball from Parker through their units, which eventually allowed Wylie to chip the ball out wide to El Reid.

The full-back crossed centrally to Flegg, and the forward volleyed home for her fifth of the season.

Reid’s assist was her fourth in three consecutive games.

Southampton were now sitting comfortably but didn’t let any complacency seep in.

Kaur and Kaitlyn Cousens were calm and composed in waiting to make the right passes forward.

Plymouth were reluctant to press, despite still creating some attacking opportunities for themselves.

They nearly earnt themselves a consolation goal, but Parker was on hand to make a superb stretching save to her right.

In the end, it wasn’t to be for the home side as Southampton took their consecutive unbeaten tally to three games.

Full-time: Plymouth 0 Southampton 3
