Southampton were narrowly beaten by a single goal from local rivals Portsmouth.

Southampton Women’s FC Reserves lost 1-0 to Portsmouth Development through Maisie Aldridge.

The midfielder fired the ball into the top left corner past stand-in keeper El Reid.

However, Southampton weren't shaken as they began playing with an element of finesse.

The Sirens' centre-back pair of Kaitlyn Cousens and Manisha Kaur played exceptionally both defensively and offensively, in providing through balls to Nancy Kimber.

Debutant Aimee Gritt slotted into the midfield unit well alongside Caitlin Bevan and Leah Knapp, who made it difficult for Portsmouth to break through.

Kimber and Amy Smith were set through on goal but both struggled to find the target.

Southampton utilised their strength in playing out from the back, which they did so calmly after making several strong blocks and tackles.

Portsmouth showed early signs of frustration, which saw Bevan and Cousens being fouled.

The second half was a rough battle for the players, but an exhilarating watch for a spectator.

Play was deep in both halves, but neither side could add to the scoreline.

Macey-Nikiah Walters drove Pompey's front line but Cousens and Marley Curtis kept her out.

Emily Flegg was brought on to boost Southampton's attacking chances, and made an instant impact in setting Eloise Ashley through on goal.

The young winger found herself in multiple one-versus-one duels throughout the game, but Skye-Louise Granger did just enough to keep her out.

The Sirens earned a handful of corners, but Pompey still held on.

Despite their lead, the Blues remained frustrated and Walters was shown a yellow card for a tackle from behind.

Pompey took the three points and made it three wins out of three against the Sirens this season.

Full-time: Portsmouth 1 Southampton 0

The Sirens will next travel to Bridgwater in the FA Women's National League Reserve's South West.
