Southampton Women’s FC Reserves got back to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Exeter City Reserves in the FA Women’s National League Reserves South West on Sunday.
Goals from Eloise Ashley, Caitlin Bevan and Nancy Kimber secured the win.
After a disappointing loss to Swindon last weekend, Alex Rigby’s side turned it around to earn themselves the three points.
Exeter started the game well as they pressed aggressively from the front.
Bevan’s technical ability was on fine display as she utilised her attacking midfield role to pick holes in Exeter’s defence.
Both goalkeepers were tested, but Southampton capitalised in the tenth minute.
Ashley worked with Lucy Coalter to pick the ball up on the edge of the box, then made her way inside before lobbing the ball over the keeper for her fifth of the season.
The game soon turned heated as the referee awarded a handful of free-kicks both ways.
A minute until half-time, Exeter broke free and advanced at pace, but Sara Luce was ready to make a comfortable save.
After the break, Ashley dispossessed Exeter out wide, but Emily Flegg’s eventual shot was straight down the keeper’s throat.
The Grecians found their equaliser not long into the second half.
Southampton failed to clear their lines, and Exeter’s Ella-Mae Miller slotted the ball past Luce.
The Sirens continued to battle as they tried to break the deadlock, with Bevan shooting from range.
Amy Smith got on the end of a low cross from Lauren Cheshire, but Exeter still held their ground.
Amanda Jones and Lucy Wilson were brought on to maintain Southampton’s defence; Kimber and El Reid were soon brought on too to keep the team’s attacking chances alive.
Coalter sped forwards with the ball and had her shot parried wide for Southampton’s corner.
Reid swung the ball into the centre of the box, and Bevan was in the right position to get the ball over the line.
But Southampton weren’t done yet, as they were soon on the attack again.
Kaitlyn Cousens cleared to Kimber, who was waiting on the half-way line.
The ball was played out wide to Reid, who beat her defender and played Kimber through on goal.
The young forward drove into the box before beating the keeper for her first goal as a Siren.
Southampton protected the scoreline to see out the rest of the game.
