REPORT | SWINDON TOWN 9 SOUTHAMPTON WOMEN’S 0

Southampton Women's FC9 Sep 2024 - 11:27

Our report from yesterday’s loss to Swindon.

From the kick-off, Southampton started well with some great possession play through the midfield.

At the two-minute mark, Holly Humphreys made space down the right wing for a shot, but the ball trickled agonisingly across the face of goal.

Swindon were quick to get down the other end of the pitch, with a shot from Jess Graham sailing over the crossbar.

At seven minutes, Swindon opened the scoring through Holly Beck-Esson who finished the rebound from Madds Millington-Stanbury’s initial save.

Two big blocks came from Laura Vokes and Manisha Kaur, but Swindon soon doubled their lead through Poppy Dearlove.

Millington-Stanbury later made another big save to deny Beck-Esson from close range.

Two more goals for Swindon then came in quick succession from Libby Davies and Gipsy Viveash.

At half-time, Southampton were four goals behind the home side.

Aaron Smith made a singular substitution at the break; Laura Rodriguez replaced Chelsea Burr on the wing.

Swindon were quick to attack again, this time Graham hitting the crossbar, the ball then being cleared by Sophia Poling.

Annie Colston got her first of the game for Swindon, finishing at the back post.

Davies then got her second, getting on the end of Viveash’s cross.

The Sirens broke into Swindon’s half, with Humphreys making a solo run into the box, but was denied by strong defending.

Jess Soares made a brilliant run a minute later to get on the end of Eliška Lynn’s ball, but her shot didn’t come off.

Just past the sixty-minute mark, Southampton won their first corner after Izzy Crook’s shot was deflected wide.

The ball was sent in deep by Elle Elkins, but Rodriguez’s eventual shot hit the side netting.

Ella Wright was then substituted in for Humphreys and made a quick impact, showing her skilful footwork on the right.

Kaur showed another piece of strong defending, tracking the play well to then clear the ball into the stands.

Smith made his third substitution, Poling being replaced by Izzy Conti.

Swindon’s substitute, Helena Diaz-Butcher, took their goal tally to seven as her cross was deflected into the goal.

Sabine Ghag was then subbed into the game for Southampton captain, Vokes.

The home side then made it eight through Graham’s strong shot.

Southampton countered a couple of minutes later, with Soares’ shot rattling the crossbar.

The final Sirens change of the day saw a swap of keepers, Jess Vallis coming in for Millington-Stanbury.

Another big block was made by Kaur, but Swindon finished the game with their ninth goal in the 89th minute through Colston.

Full-time: Swindon Town 9 Southampton Women’s 0
