Southampton Women's FC are delighted to announce the appointment of Rik Gonzalez as Chairman of the club.
Rik succeeds Aaron Smith, who returns to the dugout as First Team Manager ahead of the 2026/27 season, having most recently served as Vice Chairman during the 2025/26 campaign.
Rik's journey with the Sirens is a testament to the passion and commitment that runs throughout the club. His involvement began in 2021 as a player sponsor for E-J May, who would later go on to captain Havant & Waterlooville Women. Despite E-J's move away from the club, Rik maintained his support and connection to the women's game before returning to Southampton Women's FC following Aaron Smith's return as Chairman during one of the most challenging periods in the club's history.
Joining the committee during the 2024/25 season, Rik took on the roles of Matchday Co-ordinator, Committee Member and Commercial Officer, quickly becoming an integral part of the club's operations. His dedication and willingness to support all areas of the club saw him promoted to Vice Chairman ahead of the 2025/26 season, whilst also playing an active role in supporting the club's growing media department.
Now, after several years of service both on matchdays and behind the scenes, Rik takes the next step in his Southampton Women's FC journey as Chairman.
Speaking on his appointment, Rik said:
"I feel honoured and privileged to be stepping up to the role of Chairman. This club has such a great history and to be involved at any level should give anyone a sense of pride.
The move to Chairman frees up Smithy to do what he does best and I can think of no-one better than him to lead us into our next chapter.
We have to be honest and realistic, so I won't be saying anything ridiculous like I want us to be the same dominant force that we were in the 70s and 80s, but I certainly think this club should be looking to bounce back to the National League within the next couple of years.
We know that won't be easy. Having seen the strengths of Portchester, Winchester and Reading, and now with Farnham, Denham and Chesham joining the division, the league has only become stronger. There are no guarantees, but I know Smithy won't be content unless we're giving it a right good go.
Away from the First Team, it's also worth recognising the fantastic foundations we have in our youth section. Scott, Rob and all of the coaches have done a marvellous job and I look forward to seeing the girls continue to flourish and demonstrating just how well the pathway is working."
Whilst the title may have changed, Rik's appointment represents continuity rather than change. Having worked alongside Aaron Smith and the committee team throughout a period of rebuilding and stabilisation, he has played a key role in helping shape the club's direction both on and off the pitch.
For sponsors, volunteers, supporters and players, the appointment provides consistency in leadership and a shared commitment to the club's long-term vision. From strengthening commercial partnerships and matchday operations to supporting the continued growth of the youth pathway and First Team, Rik has already been heavily involved in many of the initiatives that continue to move Southampton Women's FC forward.
As the club enters the next phase of its journey, the focus remains on sustainable growth, strengthening the foundations already in place and creating an environment where players at every level can thrive.
Everyone at Southampton Women's FC would like to congratulate Rik on his appointment and wish him every success as Chairman.
